Rock Star Kids

Set designer and prop stylist extraordinaire, Liz Engelhardt recently worked on an incredibly fun shoot with photographer & director Josh Rothstein. The shoot features some pretty amazing kids turned rappers, break dancers, and rock musicians. As you may be able to tell (photos below), the set itself was extremely elaborate, requiring Liz to completely transform an empty garage into a rock star studio. Liz shares some insights with us about her process and what it was like to design the set:

"When my assistant and I first saw the dilapidated, semi-flooded garage on a rainy freezing cold morning, we knew we had a challenge ahead. But fortunately, I had come prepared. We first got to work by managing the water flow that was pouring into the studio from the roof.  We used found cardboard and a tarp as big as a football field to stop the water. Gradually, as we began to hang vintage posters, paintings and strings of multi colored paper lantern lights, we started to see the space transform. Then when the ad hoc textiles, plants, music equipment, and random furniture & props (such as vintage parasols to cover large blemishes in the ceiling, distressed upholstered chairs, vinyl benches and retro floor and table lamps) were installed, the space became a 360 degree thrift shop jewel box. The variety of shapes, textures and colors created a visual feast. Everywhere I looked there was a rustic, colorful vignette to capture and I was excited at the opportunity to grab photos of all the different little worlds that made up this musical wonderland."
